Google announced at its annual developer conference Google I/O 2024 on Tuesday that Project IDX, its next-generation AI-centric browser-based development environment, is currently in open beta. The company initially launched the service in August as an invite-only service gated by a waiting list.
Google says more than 100,000 developers have already tried the service.
Jeanine Banks, Google's VP and General Manager of Developer X and head of the company, said: Developer relations. “That's why we built Project IDX, a multiplatform development experience that makes building applications quick and easy. With Project IDX, you can use Next.js, Astro, Flutter, Dart, Angular, Go, and more. You'll be able to use your favorite frameworks and languages with ease using easy-to-use templates.
With this update, Google adds integration with Google Maps Platform to the IDE to help you add geolocation functionality to your apps, as well as integration with Chrome Dev Tools and Lighthouse to help debug your applications. . Google will soon also allow you to deploy apps to Cloud Run, Google Cloud's serverless platform for running front-end and back-end services.
The development environment also integrates with Checks, Google's AI-powered compliance platform. Checks itself is scheduled to be generally available from beta on Tuesday.
But of course, IDX isn't just about building AI-enabled applications, it's also about using AI in the coding process. To make this possible, IDX includes many of the features that are now standard, such as code completion and a chat assistant sidebar, as well as the ability to highlight snippets of code, similar to Photoshop's generative fill. It includes innovative features such as the ability to query Google's Gemini model. Modify the code snippet.
Whenever Gemini suggests code, we link to the original source and its associated license.
Built by Google with open source Visual Studio Code at its core, Project IDX also integrates with GitHub, making it easy to integrate with your existing workflows. In one of the latest releases of IDX, Google added built-in iOS and Android emulators for mobile developers directly into the IDE.
