Microsoft announced Tuesday that it is bringing Windows Volumetric Apps to its Meta Quest headset during its annual Build conference. With this partnership, Microsoft will bring Windows 365 and local PC connectivity to Quest headsets, allowing developers to extend their apps into 3D space.
“We're deepening our partnership with Meta to make Windows the best experience on Quest devices,” Pavan Davuluri, corporate vice president of Windows and Devices at Microsoft, said during the event. “Windows can take advantage of Quest's unique capabilities to extend Windows apps into 3D space.”

Developers can sign up for the developer preview now and gain access to the Volume API. Microsoft says the enhancements will allow users to improve their spatial understanding without leaving the apps that power their work.
The sign-up page states that Microsoft welcomes developers who create or provide plug-ins for 3D Windows desktop applications or who work with 3D applications on top of Windows desktop applications and extend those applications to 3D content using Mixed Reality. Microsoft is already working with Meta to develop the limited edition Meta Quest VR headset, which takes inspiration from Xbox. Additionally, the company launched Microsoft 365 productivity experiences from Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on Quest last December.
