Mark Zuckerberg said today that in an initial test in the US, Instagram is making AI characters built by creators through its Meta AI studio available to the public.
In a post on his broadcast channel, Zuckerberg said these chatbots will be clearly marked as AI to inform users.
“We're rolling out initial tests of AI Studio in the US and you'll start seeing AI from your favourite creators and interest-based AI on Instagram in the coming weeks. These will appear primarily in messages for now and will be clearly labelled as AI,” he said.
“These AIs are still in their early stages and are in their first beta, so we'll continue to work on improving them and making them available to more people sooner.”
Zuckerberg said he worked with creators, including meme account Wasted and tech creator Don Allen Stevenson III, to roll out early versions of creator-built chatbots.
Meta first unveiled its AI Studio, which lets businesses build custom chatbots, at its developer conference last year.
The social media company's announcement comes on the same day that a16z-backed chatbot company Character.ai rolls out a feature that lets users converse with an AI avatar over the phone.
