Mark Zuckerberg announced Wednesday that Meta's Threads now has more than 175 million monthly active users. The announcement came just two days before Threads' one-year anniversary. Zuckerberg revealed in April that Threads now has more than 150 million monthly active users, up from the 130 million reported in February.
Threads was launched on July 3, 2023, at a time when users were looking for alternatives to X (formerly Twitter) after Elon Musk introduced major changes to the social network.
The updated metrics confirm Musk's recent claim that X now has 600 million monthly active users, half of whom use the platform every day. Musk did not clarify whether this figure includes automated accounts or spam bots.
As part of today's announcement, Meta revealed some insights into Threads usage. Meta found that most users come to Threads for the text, not images, with 63% of Threads posts being text only. But that's not to say that images aren't being shared on Threads: a quarter of posts contain at least one image.
The company claims that more than 50 million tags have been created, with the top three being PhotographyThreads, BookThreads, and GymThreads.
While monthly active users alone aren't a complete measure of Threads' success, it does show that a significant number of people are using the platform. One reason for Threads' success is that the platform has some degree of integration and promotion within Instagram.
Since its launch, Threads has introduced many highly requested features, including a web app, trending topics, and an edit button. The platform has tried to align its experience and features to some extent with X, but has distanced itself from political discussions. Meta says it doesn't intend for threads to spread news, but X remains the most popular platform for people to discuss live events, like last week's presidential debate.
