Meta is changing how it labels content that's been edited or altered by AI tools on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. For this type of content, Meta will move an “AI Info” label to the post's menu. Previously, the label appeared just below the username.
The company said that the labels will still appear under content that it detects was generated by an AI tool — that is, they will be hidden under content that was modified or edited by an AI tool, but will appear prominently under content that was generated entirely by an AI prompt.
For content generated by AI, Meta “will share whether the content was labeled based on industry shared signals or because someone self-disclosed it,” the company said.

Meta says the changes, which will be rolled out next week, will better reflect the extent of AI used in content on its platform.
Making AI information labels harder to find could make it easier for users to be fooled by AI-edited content, especially as editing tools become increasingly sophisticated.
Given that generative AI is a relatively new technology, this isn't the first time Meta has changed how it labels such content on its platform: In July, the company changed its AI labels from “Created with AI” to “AI Information” after receiving complaints from photographers who said the labels were being applied to real photos.
At the time of the change, Meta said the original wording of the labels wasn't clear enough for users to understand that a particular tagged image wasn't necessarily created by AI, but may have been edited using AI-powered tools.
