1. Soccer fan and player data leaked
According to CyberNews, Football Australia left a plaintext AWS key hardcoded on the HTML page of a subdomain, accidentally exposing player and fan data. That information included personal data from ticket buyers and players, their contact details and documents such as passports. In a statement, Football Australia said it was “aware” of reports of a possible data breach and was investigating them as a priority. “Football Australia takes the safety of all parties seriously. We will keep everyone updated as details are finalized.”
2. Amazon's holiday season is 'record-breaking'
It's earnings season for tech giants, and overnight Amazon released its fourth quarter results, with the e-commerce giant posting revenue of $170 billion, up 14% from a year ago. Those results beat analysts' expectations, especially in a tough year for high-tech businesses where inflation and layoffs have affected business. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said this year was a “record holiday shopping season, capping off a strong 2023 for Amazon.” In the earnings call, Jassy acknowledged not only “significant revenue,” but also “continuous innovation and customer experience improvements across our businesses.”
3. Australians affected by FTX scandal could get their money back
It's a good day for Australians who lost money in the FTX cryptocurrency scandal. According to The Australian, 30,000 Australians will get their money back from the disgraced cryptocurrency company. FTX's lawyers said that since the company stopped restructuring, the cryptocurrency company opted for liquidation, which would allow it to repay its customers “in full.” Negotiations between creditors and investors have been ongoing since FTX filed for bankruptcy in 2022.
4. Nearly 30,000 tech workers lost their jobs in January
There is no doubt that the past 12 months have been extremely tough for tech workers, with most tech giants laying off some of their employees since January 2023. Layoffs.fyi, a layoff tracking site, tweeted that he had nearly 30,000 staff laid off in January 2024 alone. This is the highest number since March 2023. 5. Vision Pro countdown begins
