YouTube takes on TikTok with longer short videos, templates, trends, and more

YouTube on Thursday announced a series of updates to its short video product, YouTube Shorts. These include the ability for creators to upload videos of up to three minutes. The company also says it will update the Shorts player, introduce templates, and add a new Shorts Trends page for mobile devices.

A series of combined updates could help YouTube become more competitive with TikTok. TikTok already allows longer videos (10 minutes to record and 60 minutes to upload), making it easier for users to participate in trends.

YouTube says the new Shorts player is designed to streamline the look of these short videos and highlight creators' content by placing it front and center in the user interface. This is achieved by changing the interaction buttons (comments, shares, etc.) on the right side of the screen to solid white icons instead of solid white icons, allowing viewers to see more of the video than they otherwise would have. You will be able to see more.

In addition, the author's name, description, and audio information are further compressed to take up less space at the bottom of the screen. Unfortunately, the latter change truncates the video description and requires users to click the “Details” button to read the full text.

Meanwhile, the addition of templates will allow creators and other YouTube users to jump on trends faster. This is an area where TikTok excels today with CapCut, which is designed to work with short video apps. From TikTok videos created using CapCut templates, users can jump directly into CapCut's app and join the trend by modifying the template with their own content.

Now YouTube is doing something similar, but you don't need a separate app.

Instead, short users can[リミックス]Tap the option and[このテンプレートを使用する]You will be able to create your own videos by selecting . In the coming months, YouTube will make content available to users directly from the Shorts camera, making it even easier to remix clips from your favorite videos and music videos, or grab multiple clips from across YouTube. It says that it will be.

Related to trends, the mobile version of Shorts is introducing a new page to keep up with the latest information, where users can find popular trends in their country and get inspired. This is the difference between YouTube and TikTok. TikTok focuses on allowing users to discover trends by simply browsing the For You feed or tapping search. However, TikTok has removed its popular Discover page, which featured what's currently popular on the app. TikTok rolled out a “Friends” tab to replace Discover, hoping to make the app more of a social network.

Still, the global nature of TikTok allows users to not only take inspiration from popular videos around the world, but also pick up trends from other countries and make them their own. The most recent example is the baby hippo, Mu Deng. This caused such a sensation that it was the subject of an SNL skit.

YouTube has announced that it will “soon” allow users to preview what they're saying in comments directly from their Shorts feed. This change could encourage more interaction with videos and encourage creators to publish “Rage Bait.” Response — in hopes of increasing engagement.

The final change will allow users to customize how much of their short videos appear in their feed. This is a new option that can be accessed from the three-dot menu at the top right of the short grid in your home feed.[ショートの表示を減らす]Available from. However, YouTube says this will only “temporarily” reduce the number of short videos users will see. However, the company did not define how long the hiatus would be.

A previously announced update allows creators to use Google DeepMind's video generation AI model Veo in YouTube Shorts. The update, expected later this year, will allow creators to change the background of their videos and publish standalone video clips, YouTube noted.
