OpenAI hires its first chief economist. Aaron Chatterjee served as chief economist at the Department of Commerce under President Joe Biden and as senior economist on President Barack Obama's Council of Economic Advisers.
Chatterjee, who is also a professor of business and public policy at Duke University, will research the economic impact of AI at OpenAI and lead research on how AI will impact economic growth and employment prospects. .
Notably, Chatterjee helped coordinate the Biden administration's implementation of the CHIPS Act of 2022, which approved approximately $280 billion in funding for computer chip development in the United States. Understanding and political connections are unique efforts that could help OpenAI make chip designs.
Chatterji isn't the only high-profile hire at OpenAI right now. The company also named Scott Schools, a former deputy assistant attorney general and Uber's head of compliance, as its new chief compliance officer. OpenAI said he will work with OpenAI's board of directors and teams across the company to address legal requirements and ethics.
