French startup Hyperline aims to build the next generation of Chargebee. Over the past two years, the startup has been building a new billing platform that can be used for recurring subscriptions, one-time purchases, usage-based billing, and more.
Hyperline raised its first funding round of 4 million euros ($4.1 million at current exchange rates) from Index Ventures in 2023. Now, Index Ventures is doubling down on this investment, investing an additional $10 million in the startup.
Billing may seem like a simple problem, but it becomes a pain when you start scaling. “What takes time when it comes to billing is really the day-to-day operations. If you have more than 200 or 300 customers every day, someone has to go and make sure everything is correct,” says the founder and CEO. CEO Lucas Bedu told TechCrunch.
In some cases, pricing may not be appropriate. You may also forget to add some items to the invoice, or your client may want a partial refund. And, of course, it happens quite often that automatic payments fail for some reason.
“Initially, we looked at current tools like Chargebee and said to ourselves, let's do something a little bit better than them. 20% better is great, but all It's just different now. People now want automation, they don't want to process invoices, send reminders, create quotes, etc. manually,” Bedaux said. Ta.
In addition to subscription management, Hyperline has added other pricing models. For example, clients can set custom prices on the fly or add usage-based components to pay only for what they use. Hyperline also handles invoices directly.
And when it's time to pay, Hyperline handles that part for you instead of processing the payment directly. “We manage the entire value chain except payments… But we are doing something really great with payments. We are positioning ourselves as an orchestrator. Our customers We don’t use processors directly,” Bedu said.
Rather than jumping between different tabs to interact with Stripe, GoCardless, Airwallex, or another payment processor, Hyperline acts as an interface for interacting with these payment providers. Easily use multiple payment providers depending on country and payment method.
Customers typically start using the web interface. Connect Hyperline to your CRM so your sales team can create quotes directly from your CRM. You can also connect the platform to your accounting software to process invoices and reconcile payments.
However, Hyperline also provides an API. This is especially useful for syncing events directly from your data warehouse for usage-based billing.
Hyperline currently employs 14 people, with plans to grow to 25 in the near future. Clients include Lokki, Malou, ScorePlay, Gladia, and Formance.
“Currently, the majority of our customers have revenues of between €3 million and €10 million,” Bedaux said. But Hyperline already thinks it can partner with large companies that handle large amounts of invoices. This requires cooperation with the integrated company. And that's something Hyperline is already testing.
