BlueSky allows for up to 3 minutes of video. The platform began supporting video in September with a time limit of 60 seconds.
With new, expanded time limits, BlueSky is more aligned with user experiences along threads from its competitors, X (formerly Twitter) and Meta. X allows non-paying users to upload videos for up to 2 minutes and 20 seconds long, while threads allow users to upload videos for up to 5 minutes.
This change is also welcome news for all apps that work to become “Tiktok of Bluesky” such as Bluescreen and Skylight. The developers behind these apps are working to bring a video experience to Bluesky, either through the Video First Bluesky client or as an entirely new app built with the protocols used by Bluesky. The expanded time limit allows users to offer Tiktok alternatives that are more closely matched with the popular short form video app that allows users to share videos up to 10 minutes long.
Bluesky also announced that it has added a new “Chat Request” screen that lets people sift messages from unknown users. Once a user receives a DM request, they can choose to accept or reject the conversation via this new screen.
Additionally, BlueSky allows users to mute their accounts more quickly by clicking on the 3-dot menu of posts and selecting the “Mute Account” option. Social networks also added better tablet size layouts on the web, improving their moderation reporting flow.
