Tinder is requesting new California users to use facial recognition technology to validate their profiles, Axios reported Monday. The new “face check” feature is intended to reduce spoofing on dating apps and ensure that people are not connected to bots or fake accounts.
Facecheck requires users to take short video selfies while signing up for the app. The scan will check that the person is authentic, check if the face matches the photo in your profile, and detect if the same face is being used by multiple accounts, Axios reports.
If the user passes the check, they will receive a photo-validated badge in their profile. Tinder removes selfie videos, but stores encrypted facemaps to help you find replicated profiles in the future, the report says.
Face checks are already in use in Colombia and Canada.
It is worth noting that face checks are different from Tinder ID checks, which are used to verify age and identity using government-issued IDs.
