Amazon plans to shut down its standalone Freevee app in August, according to in-app notifications to users. Free, ad-supported streaming services have instructed viewers to continue watching Freebee content on Prime Video.
“Prime Video is a new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and live television,” the notification to readers said. “The Freevee app is accessible until August 2025. Keep watching your favorite free originals and hit movies, shows and live TV library for free on Prime Video. No subscription required.
The move is no surprise as Amazon confirmed its service went sundown in November 2024 and integrated its content into Prime Video.
In a statement at the time, Amazon said, “We have decided to phase out Freevee Branding. There will be no changes to the content available to Prime members, and will have access to a vast offering of free streaming content, including Amazon MGM Studios' choice originals, various licensed movies and series, and a wide library of Prime Video.

Amazon's decision to shut down its services could reflect a strategic move to simplify its delivery and centralize content on a single platform. Instead of operating two separate services, the company is consolidating its streaming efforts around Prime Video.
Released in 2019, Freevee is available in the US, UK, Germany and Austria. The service was originally called “IMDB TV” and was later rebranded to Freevee in 2022.
Freevee's popular original series include the Emmy-nominated reality comedy show “Ju Juju Duty”, the crime show “Bosch: Legacy”, and the soap opera “Neighbor”. These shows can be accessed via Prime Video under the “Monitor for Free” section.
The news comes weeks after Nielsen's report first saw full viewership among Americans in May, surpassing both cable and network television, and free streaming services have become a major driver of streaming's overall success. The report found that Pluto TV, Roku Channel and Tubi accounted for a total of 5.7% of total television viewing in May.
