Today's search is full of AI Slops and it's not uncommon for people to add “Reddit” to their queries in the hopes of finding useful answers to their questions. Google is trying to integrate Reddit results into the search interface, noticing trends, and Reddit is also experimenting with its own AI search. However, the company has higher ambitions. It wants to be the go-to search engine that people use.
“We're excited to announce that we're hoping to see the team's efforts to meet the needs of our customers,” said Steve Huffman, CEO of Reddit during a second quarter conference call Thursday.
Huffman said Reddit's search feature has over 70 million users per week, and Reddit Answers, an AI-powered Q&A product, is currently used by 6 million people.
Reddit Answers is currently available in 12 countries and the company plans to expand globally, as well as provide a prominent placement in the site's interface. The company ultimately wants to use Reddit's answers to integrate core search capabilities and redesign the app to make the search box look more prominent.
“We're uniting them [Reddit search and Reddit Answers] I'm going to bring its front and center to the app into a single search experience. So whether you're the new user who opens an app for the first time or the user who opens the app, that search box will be present immediately,” Huffman said on the phone.
With products like ChatGpt, Prplexity and Google's new AI mode, people are increasingly being presented with chat style search interfaces. Reddit takes for granted that it will help make the search feature more convenient, tapping on a rich trobe of user posts and comments to help people find answers.
Reddit reported a positive quarter for the second quarter, with revenues rising 78% to $500 million from the previous year. The company has launched two new advertising tools. This allows marketers to use Reddit data to find trends and leverage brand comments in their campaigns.
