Online interior design startup Havenly is acquiring artisan home décor startup The Citizenry, the company announced today. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Havenly said the acquisition is part of its efforts to build a collection of home brands that appeal to shoppers. This deal marks Havenly's third acquisition in two years.
Founded in 2014, The Citizenry works with artisans around the world to create limited edition handcrafted homewares. With the acquisition of The Citizenry, Havenly is expanding its selection of furniture, textiles and home decor.
Havenly CEO Lee Meyer told TechCrunch that the company's vision is to build a design-first ecosystem “for the emerging digitally native home consumer.” The company has been acquiring brands in the home furnishings space over the past three years to expand its portfolio. Last year, Havenly acquired Interior Define, a customizable furniture and home decor brand. In 2022, the company acquired home furnishings brand The Inside.
“Havenly customers will be able to purchase a beautifully designed and meaningful selection of upscale home décor products from The Citizenry,” Meyer said. “The Citizenry works with master artisans and traditional makers to create ethically crafted, beautifully designed, globally influenced products, from rugs and bedding to decorative baskets and accents. Havenly customers have the opportunity to support these manufacturers while building homes that are truly unique and meaningful to them.”
Havenly’s most recent funding round was a $32 million Series C announced in October 2019. This round brings Havenly's total raised to $57.8 million.
As for The Citizenry, the startup recently raised $20 million in Series B funding in June 2021. The company opened its first physical store in New York City in 2020. Havenly says there are no plans to make any changes to the store.
Looking to the future, Mayer said that as digitally native millennials become the majority and driving force behind homebuyers, Havenly continues to strive to understand what consumers are looking for from a home design standpoint and The company said it will continue to evolve its products and portfolio to meet the needs of customers.
