Adobe adds new AI-powered image editing capabilities to Photoshop

Adobe offers more AI-powered image editing and extensions to Photoshop using Firefly models. The company said today it is deploying Image-UpScaling functionality, object blends and upgraded object removers in Photoshop.

The company said the generative upscale feature enhances images up to 8 megapixels. This will help you restore old photo details, upscaling printed images, and adopt assets on various platforms.

In 2024, Adobe teased a feature called Project Perfect Blend. It is working on modifying the color, shadow, and lighting of new objects added to existing images. The idea is to have new objects like sofa chairs in the room that blend in with the environment.

Adobe expands this feature under Harmonize Moniker, places objects in the scene, removes their background, and uses the Firefly model in Photoshop to adjust color, lighting, shadows and visual tone to fit the scene.

The company is also deploying improved object removal tools. Previously, when deleting an object using a generated fill, the tool would sometimes bring unnecessary artifacts to the image, in order to consider the entire scene and fill in gaps in deleted objects. The company reworked its algorithm to focus on removing objects and filling gaps in the background.

In a demo seen by TechCrunch, Joel Baer, Adobe's Director of Product Management at Photoshop, added a green blob to the tool when he removed a small bowl of Pico de Gallo from the photo using previous versions of object removal. The new version successfully deleted the object and replaced it with a background.

Adobe has added some small features to Photoshop. This includes better ways to place assets in shared and organized spaces. Additionally, the company can select the version of the Firefly model to select while using AI features.

“We spoke with photographers, designers and content creators to understand the problems and slower workflows. These new features help save time, remove friction from workflows, and take on some of the time-consuming tasks.”

Generative luxury, harmony, and improved object removal are available in beta versions for Photoshop in both desktop and web versions. The Harmonize feature is also available in the new Photoshop iOS app through the Early Access program.
