Apple reportedly shelved plans to integrate Meta's AI models due to privacy concerns

Days after The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple and Meta were in talks to integrate Meta's AI models, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said that Apple has no plans for such a move.

According to Bloomberg, Apple briefly held talks with Meta about a potential partnership in March, when the company was in talks with several companies about integrating their models into its devices.

However, Bloomberg reports that the company has shelved plans to include Meta's AI models in iPhones due to privacy concerns, and the article also notes that Cupertino-based Apple has continually criticized Meta's privacy practices, and that a partnership with the social networking company would not be good for Apple's image.

Earlier this month, Apple released its own suite of AI features under the Apple Intelligence brand, and also announced a partnership with OpenAI to allow iPhone users to invoke ChatGPT for certain queries.

However, the deal is not exclusive, and Apple has said it is open to integrating a range of AI models into its devices. The company confirmed at the Worldwide Developers Conference that it will be working with Google to roll out Gemini.

While Meta may not have the privilege of direct integration with millions of devices, the company relies on its apps, which have billions of users, including Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook and Messenger. On Monday, the company broadly released the Meta AI chatbot to users in India, its largest market in the world.
