Apple announced at WWDC 2024 that one of its most popular apps, the Photos app, will be overhauled to coincide with the release of iOS 18. The new app introduces new navigation, new organization features, and more ways to find your favorite photos, including friends, family, pets, and travel.
The company says the new design will reduce the time you spend searching for photos because everything you need is right at your fingertips. One big change is that the app is now consolidated into a single view, with a photo grid at the top and a thematically organized library at the bottom.

The grid is a great place to look back on specific dates, months, or years, and the filter button lets you narrow down to a specific type of content. You can also filter screenshots from this feature.
Another feature will use the “intelligence” coming in iOS 18 to better organize your photos. Below Grids, you can access your most important photos in collections that are automatically organized by topics, like time, people, favorite memories, travel, and more.

The Recent Days feature also sorts your photos by date, filtering out clutter like receipt photos, and gives you an autoplay view of all your photos at the top of the screen. You can swipe through Recent Days to see older collections.
What's more, you'll be able to view your collection as a collage and share it with others with just one tap.
While you've always been able to find a specific person in your library, this new feature will group your favorite people together for the first time – a great way to find photos of your family or best friends.

Meanwhile, the new Trips section collects all your trips in one place and automatically plays your trips as you browse, and Apple says you can reorder your collection and pin your favorite trips to make them more visible.
When you swipe right from the grid, the new carousel highlights your best content in a poster-like view. Photos you've favorited will also appear here, along with the rest of your photos. The carousel surprises and delights you with new photos every day.
