A cyber attack on US health tech giant Change Healthcare has brought much of the US healthcare system to a standstill for the second week in a row. Hospitals cannot verify insurance benefits for hospitalized patients, process prior authorizations for patient procedures or surgeries, or process billing for medical services. Pharmacies have struggled to decide how much to charge for prescriptions for patients who don't have access to their health insurance records, with some having to pay out of pocket for expensive drugs and others having to pay for expensive drugs out of pocket. I can't afford the cost. Since…
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is back at the table, or at the boardroom. OpenAI announced today that Altman will be returning to the company's board of directors, months after he was ousted as OpenAI's CEO. He will be joined by three new members: Sue Desmond Hellman, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Nicole Seligman, former president of Sony Entertainment, and Fiji Simo, CEO of Instacart. The board of directors now has seven members. None of the members of the interim board (the board created after Altman's firing in November) will resign as a result of the appointments…
During a Zoom meeting with senior leaders last summer, Techstars CEO Maëlle Gavet sat at a table with a notebook open in front of her, her laptop beside her and her arms crossed. Her audience had just asked her about the progress of the organization's $80 million Advanced Cities Fund, raised through JPMorgan's private bank platform. In a calm manner that seemed to be listening closely to her words, she replied that “Advancing Cities'' was not working. Multiple incidents across multiple programs have roiled JPMorgan, according to sources familiar with the conversations, including evidence seen by TechCrunch. Techstars had begun…
Bumble has lost a third of its Texas workforce in the months since the state passed the controversial abortion bill, also known as the Texas Heartbeat Act, over a year ago. This new data point was shared by Bumble's interim general counsel Elizabeth Monteleone, who spoke on a panel at the SXSW conference in Austin, Texas, this afternoon. The panel focused on the “Healthcare Crisis in Post-Law America” and featured women who filed lawsuits and spoke out about the need to involve doctors, not politicians, in health care decisions. Additionally, Monteleone pointed out that dating app maker Bumble no longer…
For a country with some very sunny regions, Mexico generates surprisingly little solar power. Its solar power generation capacity is just over 10 gigawatts, one-eighth the size of Germany, which has less sunlight and a 40% smaller population. The German government's incentives helped, but that's not all. In Mexico, the solar power market is still in its infancy, so customers are not very familiar with the technology and the market remains highly fragmented. For the two entrepreneurs, it was an opportunity. A few years ago, Edoardo Delepiane and Raffaele Sertolio were looking to start a new business. The Italians were…
Hey. Sorry for calling you so suddenly. No, no, nothing serious. I'm fine. I would like to apologize for surprising you last time. I wasn't myself. But I've changed. Honestly, I don't even know who I was at that time. Everything was so fresh. I've been working on myself and I think the results speak for themselves. I'm really new. Of course, you can't take credit for everything. I didn't do this all by myself. If anything, it was the VisionOS 1.1 update that showed me that I still have the ability to grow. I am a more fully enlightened…
Welcome to Startups Weekly — a weekly roundup of must-sees from the world of startups. Sign up here to get it delivered to your inbox every Friday. This week I investigated what happened to a Norwegian hardware startup. Its cap table is so volatile that three different investors have concluded that it is essentially uninvestable as it is. Luckily they had some advice on how to change that. He also turned to another startup, a Turkish company that raised $4 million. This company really wouldn't exist if the country hadn't introduced fairly strong import taxes. He was exploring the strange…
