Norway's government has accused a Chinese-backed hacker group known as Salt Typhoon of infiltrating several organizations in the country.
In a report released on Friday, the Norwegian Police Security Service said a hacker group believed to be working on behalf of the Chinese government targeted vulnerable network devices for espionage.
Norway is the latest country to confirm a salt typhoon-related invasion.
Described by senior U.S. national security officials as a “defining threat of our time,” Salt Typhoon has been secretly hacking the networks of critical infrastructure organizations around the world, including carriers in Canada and the United States, for years, where it is believed to have intercepted the communications of senior politicians. This series of breaches has put pressure on carriers to improve their security.
The report does not reveal many details about the hacking operations targeting the country. A spokeswoman for the Norwegian embassy in the United States did not respond to a request for comment.
