Smartphone chip maker Qualcomm said it will lay off 226 employees in San Diego later this year, according to a California WARN notice released this week. The layoffs, first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune, will take effect the week of Nov. 12.
The layoffs affect employees at 16 facilities across San Diego, including the company's headquarters, where its cybersecurity division is located. It's unclear if the cybersecurity team is affected, and a Qualcomm spokesperson declined to respond to questions from TechCrunch.
Qualcomm spokeswoman Christine Stiles said in a statement: “Our leading technology and product portfolio position us to execute on our diversification strategy. As part of the normal course of business, we are prioritizing and aligning our investments, resources and talent to ensure we are best positioned to take full advantage of our unprecedented diversification opportunities.”
Qualcomm's decision to lay off hundreds of employees comes less than a year after the company laid off more than 1,250 employees. In 2023, Qualcomm recorded annual revenue of $35.8 billion and CEO Cristiano Amon received total executive compensation of $23.5 million.
