US mobile phone company Patriot Mobile experienced a data breach that included subscriber personal information such as names, email addresses, home zip codes, and account PINs, TechCrunch has learned.
Patriot Mobile, which reportedly has less than 100,000 subscribers, describes itself as “America's only Christian conservative wireless provider, and our mission is to… and the zealous defense of our God-given constitutional rights and freedoms.”
The wireless carrier, whose website features photos of former Fox News host Glenn Beck and former Trump administration officials Sebastian Gorka and Steve Bannon, recently began spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to support conservative and pro-Christian candidates and causes in Texas.
The hackers claiming responsibility for the data breach provided TechCrunch with samples of data stolen from Patriot Mobile. TechCrunch confirmed that the data sample contained real customer data, in part due to an apparent bug on Patriot Mobile's public website that leaked some of the same personal information.
A spokesperson for Patriot Mobile did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment.
Patriot Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). That means the company doesn't own the network infrastructure, instead leasing access from AT&T and T-Mobile.
News of the Patriot Mobile data breach comes a month after AT&T, the nation's largest mobile phone provider, confirmed a large-scale theft of customer personal and account information several years ago. As a result of this breach, AT&T announced that after TechCrunch reported to the company that the leaked data contained easily decrypted encrypted passcodes that could be used to break into customer accounts. has reset account passcodes for millions of customers.
