eBay's latest AI feature lets sellers replace the background of their images with an AI-generated one. The tool is currently available to iOS users in the US, UK, and Germany, and will be gradually rolled out to Android users over the coming months.
Following in the footsteps of Amazon and Google, the e-commerce company on Tuesday announced the release of a new AI-powered background enhancement tool that automatically removes the background of an image and replaces it with one of the user's choice, such as placing the product on a flashy table or a colorful backdrop that reflects a specific brand. Amazon and Google released a similar tool for advertisers last year, allowing brands to use generative AI to create new product images.
eBay's background correction tool could be useful for sellers who don't have the equipment or skills to take professional-quality photos. It could also improve on eBay's previous feature, which used computer vision techniques to give listing photos a simple white background. The new AI feature is powered by the open-source model Stable Diffusion.
This latest announcement comes a year after eBay introduced an AI feature that generates titles and descriptions for product listings.
