French police and Europol searched X's local offices, the Paris public prosecutor's office said on Tuesday.
The raid is part of an ongoing investigation launched in 2025 into alleged “unauthorized extraction of data” from automated data processing systems “by an organized group.”
The cybercrime unit of the French public prosecutor's office said it is now expanding its investigation to include other criminal charges, including conspiracy to possess and distribute child sexual abuse material and distribution of child sexual abuse material. Invasion of privacy. And Holocaust denial.
The expanded investigation comes as X and its owner Elon Musk face widespread criticism for allowing the use of Grok AI to generate images of others without their consent, including images of child abuse, on the company's platform.
Musk, who acquired X (formerly Twitter) in 2022, and former X CEO Linda Yaccarino were subpoenaed for questioning on April 20. An unnamed X staffer was also subpoenaed in the same week, prosecutors said.
Spokespeople for X and eMed, of which Yaccarino is currently CEO, did not respond to TechCrunch's requests for comment.
When asked for comment, Mairis de Roque, a spokeswoman for the Paris public prosecutor's office, confirmed the raid in a statement. “The public prosecutor's office's ultimate aim is to ensure compliance with French law, given that Platform X operates in the country,” the statement said.
