At the Android show ahead of Google I/O 2025, Google announced that with the release of Android 16 it will add new device-specific features to the Advanced Protection Program, which is designed to protect public figures such as politicians and journalists. New features include a new way to store device logs that are only accessible by users, protection from spam calls, and an automatic restart if the device is locked for a certain period of time. These features are intended to add an additional layer of security to public figures and to ensure that devices are not compromised.
With the release of Android 16, the company is adding intrusion logging capabilities for threat analysis. This feature stores device logs with end-to-end encryption in the cloud. If you suspect that you are compromised around your device, you can use these logs to perform the analysis.
It also adds USB protection so that you can only charge through a new USB connection while the device is locked.
Google said devices based on advanced protection programs will also automatically restart if the device is locked for 72 hours in a row. TechCrunch reported last month that the feature was mentioned in the Google Play Services Update.
Additionally, if Advanced Protection is enabled using Android 16, the system will not be able to automatically reconnect to an insecure Wi-Fi network.
The program also gains the ability to personally handle conversations on your device in order to try to detect potential conspiracies on your continued phone. The company launched this feature of pixel phones earlier this year.
