Google Maps is adding new features powered by Gemini, Google's generative AI model. The company announced Thursday an upcoming update that will allow Google Maps users in the U.S. to use AI to find new places to visit and answer questions about different locations.
The platform also has enhanced navigation features that help drivers reach their destinations by highlighting things like which lane to be in.
By bringing Gemini to Maps, Google will aim to position its navigation app to compete with Apple Maps and navigation startups.
In other updates, Google Maps will now allow users to get ideas for places to go and things to do just by asking the service. For example, if you have a friend visiting, you can ask Maps what to do with your friend at night. Gemini then offers a curated list of options, including checking out moonshine shops and live music.
To learn more about the places Gemini recommends, users can read a quick summary of what people thought about the place. If you have additional specific questions, such as whether there is outdoor seating, you can also ask Gemini.
These new features are rolling out to Android and iOS in the US this week. Google said it plans to bring a similar experience to search, including an AI-powered review summary and the option to ask questions about your location.

When it comes to new navigation features, Google will make it easier for Maps users to drive in unfamiliar areas with multiple lanes, junctions, and exits. Google Maps will now show lanes, crosswalks, and road signs clearly on the map. Plus, it shows you exactly which lane to enter, so you don't have to merge at the last moment.
This update makes it easy to explore things to do along your route before you start driving. Enter your destination and Google Maps will show you popular landmarks, attractions, scenic spots, and eateries.
When you arrive at your destination, Google Maps will show you nearby parking lots. After parking, the app can remind you to save your parking space so you don't forget where you left your car. You can also get walking directions from your car to the entrance of your destination with the option to launch Street View or AR (Augmented Reality) walking navigation.
In addition, Google Maps allows users to see and report weather disruptions on the roads, such as flooded, unplowed, and poor visibility areas.
Google also announced that Google Maps' Immersive View feature, which creates 3D models of destinations, will expand to 150 cities around the world. As part of the expansion, this feature will launch in new locations including Brussels, Kyoto, and Frankfurt.
As part of today's announcement, Google revealed that it is bringing Gemini to Waze, its other navigation app. The company has started testing a feature that allows users to report traffic accidents using their voice. For example, you can tap the report button and speak naturally, saying something like, “I see a traffic jam ahead.”
