Google announced on Tuesday that its digital ID will appear in more states and services with Google Wallet. The company also shares that wallets have got a way to personally verify age, and that the app has expanded to 50 more countries.
Residents of Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico and West Virginia can immediately store US government-issued digital IDs in Google Wallets. Additionally, people in Arizona, Georgia, Maryland and New Mexico will be able to use their mobile IDs in their DMVs.
Please note that as the actual ID deadline for May 7, 2025, Google can use an ID pass created from a US passport to pass TSA security for domestic travel at supported airports, even if you do not have an actual ID driver's license or a state-issued ID. However, the ID path is not a replacement for a physical ID, so you still need to maintain it.
Users can also instantly recover their Amazon accounts using their digital ID, access online health services using CVS and MyChart on EPIC, and check their profiles on platforms like Uber.
Additionally, Google has deployed the ability for UK residents to create digital ID passes with their UK passports and store them safely in their Google wallets.
Because many websites and services require verification, Google says it wants to create a verification system that not only validates the age of users, but also protects the privacy of the entire process. To achieve this, Google has integrated Zero Knowledge Proof (ZKP) technology into Google Wallet.
This integration allows Google to provide fast age verification on mobile devices, apps, and websites that use the digital certification API. The company uses ZKP with other Google products and uses partners with apps such as Bumble, which uses the digital ID of Google Wallet to verify user ID and ZKP to verify age. Google will also open its ZKP technology to other wallets and online services.
Regarding the expansion of wallets to 50 more countries, Google did not provide a list of specific countries. TechCrunch has checked the details.
