Google will deploy AI-powered Business Calling capabilities to bring Gemini 2.5 Pro to AI mode

Google is deploying business call capabilities powered by agent AI for all US users, the company announced Wednesday. Tech Giant is enhancing Google Search's AI mode by bringing the Gemini 2.5 Pro model to the search experience and introducing deep research capabilities.

The New Business Calling feature uses AI to call local businesses on your behalf to gather availability and pricing information. The idea behind this feature is to actually take the phone and allow you to access information without having to talk to anyone.

Google began testing the feature in January with users who opted for the company's search lab experiment.

To get started, you need to search for something like “Pet Groomer Near Me”. The result shows a new option that says “There is AI Check Pricing.” From there, you will receive information about bookings and services from various local businesses, answering a few questions. For example, you will be asked which type of pet you have, the services you need, and when you need them.

A Google spokesman told TechCrunch in an email that every call to your business begins with announcing that it is an automated system that makes calls from Google on behalf of users.

It is worth noting that Google faced backlash several years ago due to similar business call features that simulate human speech, as some users are concerned that the company will mislead it to think that they are talking to other people. Following the backlash, Google said that AI will identify itself as a robot when placing these calls.

The new Business Calling feature is beginning to be rolled out to all search users in the US, as it has higher limits for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers.

Google has supercharged AI mode. It is a Google search feature that allows you to ask complex, multipart questions via an AI interface using Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriber Gemini 2.5 Pro. The high-tech giant says the model is excellent at advanced reasoning, mathematics and coding questions. Subscribers can select a 2.5 Pro model from the AI mode drop-down menu.

Regarding the new “deep search” feature in AI mode, Google says it can save subscribers time by conducting hundreds of searches and publishing inferences across a variety of information and creating comprehensive, fully cited reports in minutes.

Google points out that deep searches can be useful for in-depth research related to work, hobbies, or research. The company says it can also be useful when making big life decisions, such as buying a new home or seeking support in financial analysis.

Since launching earlier this year, Google has continued to carry on popular services such as Perplexity AI and Openai's ChatGPT search, making it a more featured AI mode. For example, last month, Google launched a function that allows you to have back and forth voice conversations in AI mode. In May, Google introduced a shopping experience in AI mode, allowing it to view product visuals and other AI-powered guidance that utilizes product data.
