Google's Gemini AI app currently has over 400 million active users per month, CEO Sundar Pichai said in a press conference ahead of Google I/O 2025.
Google's AI Chatbot app is approaching a similar scale to Openai's ChatGPT app. According to a recent court filing, Google estimated in March that ChatGpt had around 600 million Mauss, while Gemini only had 350 million Mauss.
The rise of ChatGpt poses a major threat to Google's search business, providing users with a new, more interactive way to access information on the web. The Gemini app is Google's most direct challenge to compete with Openai in the Chatbot era and appears to have been doing well so far. The Gemini app appears to be pulling users away from ChatGpt.
Over the past few months, Google has rocked the rank behind Gemini. Josh Woodward, the Google leader behind the Viral NotebookLM app, is responsible for Gemini, part of Google's efforts to generate buzz around AI chatbots.
Of course, the Gemini app is just one way Google puts AI in front of users. Pichai also said in CALL that Google's AI overview reaches over 1.5 billion users every month. The company also announced that during Google I/O 2025 it is placing AI mode in front of more users as Google tries to update its search with more conversational experiences powered by generating AI.
Openai and Google have the most widely used AI chatbot apps, but Meta is also trying to infiltrate the space. CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently said that Meta's AI products have over 1 billion active users per month across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, and recently launched an AI chatbot app that competes with ChatGpt and Gemini.
The ChatGpt app was the only game in town a few years ago, but now there is healthy competition with Big Tech's biggest players.
