ChatGPT, OpenAI's AI-powered chatbot platform, continues to expand with new features. It now offers a store for AI-powered applications and services (GPT Store). The recently introduced memory feature allows you to save your preferences to make chats more personal. ChatGPT will also soon upgrade its voice mode, allowing you to interact with the platform in near real-time.
So, you might be wondering, how much does ChatGPT cost? This is a question that is harder to answer than it might seem. OpenAI offers a range of paid and free ChatGPT plans for a variety of customers, from individuals to non-profits, small businesses, educational institutions, and large enterprises.
To help you understand the different ChatGPT subscription options available to you, we've created a guide to ChatGPT pricing, which we'll update as new plans are introduced.
ChatGPT Free
In the past, the free version of ChatGPT was quite limited in what it could do, but that has changed as OpenAI rolled out new features and underlying generative AI models.
Free users of ChatGPT get access to OpenAI's flagship model GPT-4o, responses augmented with web content, access to the GPT Store, and the ability to upload files and photos and ask questions about those uploads. Users can also save their chat preferences as “memories” and take advantage of Advanced Data Analysis, a ChatGPT feature that can “infer” (i.e. analyze data from) files such as spreadsheets and PDFs.
However, the free ChatGPT plan does have some drawbacks, including a daily capacity limit for the GPT-4o model based on demand. Once a user reaches the limit, they will automatically switch to OpenAI's less capable GPT-3.5 model, albeit temporarily. ChatGPT's free users also lack access to certain data analysis features, which we'll discuss in more detail below.
Chat GPT Plus
For individual users who want the more advanced features of ChatGPT, there is ChatGPT Plus, which costs $20 per month.
ChatGPT Plus offers five times the storage capacity of the free version of ChatGPT, plus early and priority access to new tools like the OpenAI macOS client for ChatGPT.
In addition, ChatGPT Plus subscribers can enjoy upgraded data analysis capabilities powered by GPT-4o, allowing them to create interactive graphs and tables from their datasets. Users can upload files to be analyzed directly from Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, or from their own devices.
ChatGPT Team
For example, if you run a small business or manage an organization and need multiple ChatGPT licenses and collaboration features, ChatGPT Team may be right for you, priced at $30 per user per month, or $25 per user per month for up to 149 users billed annually.
ChatGPT Team provides a dedicated workspace and administrative tools for team management. All users of the ChatGPT Team plan have access to OpenAI's latest models and the aforementioned tools that enable ChatGPT to analyze, edit, and extract information from files. Additionally, ChatGPT Team allows users in the team to build and share custom apps (similar to apps in the GPT store) based on OpenAI models. These apps can be customized for specific use cases or departments, or tailored to the team's data.
ChatGPT Enterprise
Larger organizations, specifically those needing more than 149 ChatGPT licenses, can opt for OpenAI's enterprise ChatGPT plan, ChatGPT Enterprise. OpenAI doesn't disclose pricing for ChatGPT Enterprise, but the reported cost is around $60 per user, per month, for a minimum of 150 users and a 12-month contract.
ChatGPT Enterprise adds “enterprise-grade” privacy and data analytics features to standard ChatGPT, and offers enhanced performance and customization options. It has a dedicated workspace and admin console, giving you the tools to manage how employees in your organization use ChatGPT, including single sign-on, domain verification, and an integrated dashboard that shows usage and engagement statistics.
Shareable conversation templates provided as part of ChatGPT Enterprise allow users to build ChatGPT-powered internal workflows and bots, while OpenAI's API platform allows businesses to create fully customized ChatGPT-powered solutions as needed.
ChatGPT Enterprise customers also receive priority access to OpenAI expertise for their models and lines, including a dedicated account team, training, and integrated invoicing, and are subject to a Business Associate Agreement with OpenAI, which is required by U.S. law for companies using tools like ChatGPT that handle personal health information, such as medical records.
Chat GPT Education
ChatGPT Edu, a new service from OpenAI, offers a version of ChatGPT built for universities and their students, as well as faculty researchers and campus operations teams. Pricing has not yet been announced or reported as second-hand, but we will update this section once it is announced.
ChatGPT Edu is comparable to ChatGPT Enterprise, except that it supports SCIM, an open protocol used to simplify cloud identity and access management. (OpenAI plans to bring SCIM to ChatGPT Enterprise in the future.) Like ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Edu customers get data analytics tools, administrative controls, single sign-on, enhanced security, and the ability to build and share custom chatbots.
ChatGPT Edu also comes with the latest OpenAI models and, importantly, tighter message limits.
OpenAI for Nonprofits
OpenAI for Nonprofits is OpenAI's first foray into tech solutions for nonprofits. It's not a standalone ChatGPT plan, but rather a range of discounted plans for eligible organizations.
Nonprofits can access ChatGPT Team at a discounted rate of $20 per user per month, and larger nonprofits can get ChatGPT Enterprise at a 50% discount, which works out to about $30 per user.
However, the eligibility requirements are very strict: While nonprofits based anywhere in the world can apply for the discount, OpenAI does not currently accept applications from academic, medical, religious, or government institutions.
