Robotics company Sunday announced Thursday that it has raised a new round of funding that values the company at unicorn status, or more than $1 billion.
The Sunday newspaper announced that it has raised $165 million in a Series B round led by Coatue Management at a valuation of $1.15 billion. Other investors in the round include Tiger Global, Benchmark and Bain Capital Ventures.
The company came out of stealth late last year and already has 1,000 people on its waiting list, Bloomberg reports.
Sunday, founded by Tony Zhao and Cheng Chi, is developing a humanoid robot for the home called Memo that can help with tasks like laundry and clearing tables.
Experts have been trying to build such robots (of the Jetsons' Rosie variety) for decades, but they have often been short-circuited, largely due to a lack of training data to teach the robots how to reliably grasp objects of different weights, textures, and fragility (such as a towel and a wine glass). As AI technology continues to advance, a number of new robotic technologies are coming to market that aim to bring humanoid helpers back to life.
