Inspired by X, Threads tests AI-powered summary of trending topics

While Twitter-like social network Bluesky has seen a significant increase in user numbers this month, Meta's X competitor Threads is also rapidly building its platform. On Friday, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri announced that Threads would begin testing AI-powered summaries of what people are discussing on the platform in the app's “Trending” section in the U.S. .

This new addition seems similar to X's Stories feature, which uses Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok to summarize trending topics in the social network's Explore section.

Threads also plans to test an expanded set of trending topics, the company said. Additionally, users will be able to search within specific date ranges and search for posts from individual accounts.

In a post on the thread, Mosseri said the new additions are “long overdue improvements to thread search and trends.”

With many X users migrating to Bluesky, which now has over 20 million users, Meta has been quick to update Threads. The platform's users increased after the U.S. presidential election, especially after Mr. Musk used the social network to campaign for President-elect Donald Trump, as X strengthened its right-wing approach.

Following user complaints about Threads' algorithm, the platform is now accepting feedback and introduced changes this week to show more content from users you follow in the app's algorithmic feed.

Earlier this week, the social network rolled out custom feeds, allowing Threads users to curate feeds based on specific topics or specific user profiles. This tool allows Threads to compete with Bluesky's unique capabilities that allow users to build their own algorithms, feeds, and lists.

It's worth noting that Threads' user base is still much larger than Bluesky's, with over 275 million monthly active users. However, Bluesky is catching up with Threads in terms of daily active users, according to data from market intelligence firm Simiarweb. The company believes that if the social network can maintain its current growth rate, it will eventually be able to catch up with Threads.
