Instagram is adding new features like photo editing, sticker creation, themes, and more to spice up your inbox. The company is trying to make Instagram more appealing as a messaging app with features that make conversations more engaging. Some of these features may not be new, but they're all about removing friction that can stop users from sending messages.
Additionally, inboxes, or DMs (direct messages), are a competitive feature for social apps, including those competing with Twitter/X. Other startups such as Bluesky have integrated DMs directly into their apps, but Instagram X rival Threads still relies on Instagram's existing DMs for users who want to connect privately.
The new feature, released today, gives Instagram users access to a sticker maker in the direct message interface, where they can take a photo from their library and use an object cutout to create a reaction sticker. Earlier this year, WhatsApp gained a similar tool for creating stickers. What's more, you can also use the iPhone's own tool to create stickers that can be used across apps.

Instagram also lets you add stickers and doodle on photos before sending them to your friends. These tools were previously available in the story creator, so if you wanted to send an image with a sticker or doodle, you had to save the photo and then send it in a DM. Now, you can apply these edits directly within the chat interface.

Another new feature allows users to post a note on their birthday to get their friends to wish them happy birthday. When you tap on the note, a cake effect and confetti animation appears on the screen. Celebrating birthdays has been a long-standing Facebook favorite, and making birthday celebrations more important on Instagram will help users stay engaged with the app even as it faces increased competition from rival apps like TikTok.
Like other messaging apps, Instagram will also be introducing new chat themes such as “Autumn” and “Sabrina Carpenter.”
Earlier this week, Instagram added a new feature that lets users comment on Stories, also designed to boost engagement.
