Nicholas Moore, who pleaded guilty to hacking the U.S. Supreme Court's electronic document filing system dozens of times over several months, was sentenced Friday to one year of probation.
Moore also hacked into the networks of AmeriCorps, the government agency that runs scholarship volunteer programs, and the systems of the Department of Veterans Affairs, which provides health care and benefits to veterans.
The man boasted about his accomplishments on an Instagram account called @ihackedthegovernment, where he posted personal information of the people he hacked. Moore used one of the victim's credentials to access the U.S. Supreme Court's electronic document filing system, AmeriCorps, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
He was sentenced to one year in prison and fined $100,000 in restitution. Prosecutors then requested only a suspended sentence.
“I made a mistake,” Moore said during Friday's sentencing hearing, according to The Hill. “I am truly sorry. I respect the law and want to be a good citizen.”
