Meta adds an AI chatbot powered by Llama 3 to search bars across apps

Meta is making some big moves today to advance AI services across its platform. The company has upgraded his AI chatbot with its latest large-scale language model, Llama 3, which now runs in the search bar of his four major apps: Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp. In addition to this, the company also announced other new features such as faster image generation and access to his web search results.

This confirms and expands on a test TechCrunch reported last week that found the company had begun testing meta AI in Instagram's search bar.

The company also plans to launch a new meta.ai site for users to access the chatbot.

This news highlights Meta's efforts to secure its position as a market driver and the current hype for generative AI tools among consumers. Mark Zuckerberg today claimed that Meta AI is probably “the most intelligent AI assistant at our disposal.”

Meta first rolled out Meta AI in the US last year. We are currently deploying English chatbots in over a dozen countries. These countries include Australia, Canada, Ghana, Jamaica, Malawi, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Earlier this week, the company began testing Meta AI in countries such as India and Nigeria, but those countries were not included in today's announcement.

Users can already ask Meta AI for writing and recipe suggestions. Nowadays, you can also seek web-related results using Google and Bing.

The company also said image generation is now faster. You can also ask Meta AI to animate your images or convert them to GIFs. Users can see his AI tools modify images in real time as they type. The company is also working on improving the image quality of AI-generated photos.

Image generation tools that utilize AI are not good at expressing words accurately. Meta claims that its new model shows improvements in this area as well.

Everything about AI, everywhere, all at once

Meta takes the approach of making Meta AI available wherever possible. Bots will be available in search bars, personal chats, group chats, and even feeds.

The company says you can ask questions related to posts in your Facebook feed. For example, if you see a photo of the Northern Lights, you can ask Meta AI for suggestions about the best time to visit Iceland to see the Northern Lights.

Meta AI is already available on Ray-Ban smart glasses, and the company said it will soon be available on the Meta Quest headset as well.

However, there are certain drawbacks to deploying AI in many places, given the model's tendency to hallucinate. Earlier this week, 404Media reported that Meta AI posted to a parent group that there were gifted and academically challenged children attending a particular school in New York. In response, Meta said the responses had been deleted and that it would continue to work on improving these systems.

“We share information within the feature itself to help people understand that the AI may return inaccurate or inappropriate output. Since its launch, we have continually updated and improved the model. , and we continue to work on making the model better,” Mehta told 404Media.
