Meta is testing an AI-powered search bar on Instagram

Meta is working to make products powered by generative AI available to more users. Apart from testing the Meta AI chatbot on WhatsApp with users in countries such as India, the company is also experimenting with putting Meta AI in his Instagram search bar for both chatting with his AI and content discovery. going.

A search query in the search bar allows you to have a DM conversation with Meta AI, where you can ask a question or use one of the preloaded prompts. Looking at the design of the prompt screen, Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas pointed out that the interface uses a similar design to the startup's search screen.

But beyond that, it also helps you discover new content on Instagram. For example, a video on a user-posted thread shows that you can tap a prompt like “Beautiful Maui Sunset Reel” to search for reels related to that topic.

Separately, several users TechCrunch spoke to were able to ask Meta AI to search for suggestions on Reels.

This means Meta plans to leverage the power of generative AI beyond text generation and use it to display new content from networks like Instagram.

Meta acknowledged Meta AI experiments on TechCrunch and Instagram. However, the company did not say whether it uses generative AI technology for searches.

“Our AI-powered generated experiences are in various stages of development, and we are publicly testing different experiences in a limited capacity,” a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch.

You'll find lots of posts about the quality of Instagram searches. So it's no surprise that Meta wants to use generative AI to improve search.

Meta also likely wants Instagram to be more discoverable than TikTok. Last year, Google introduced a new Perspectives feature for viewing results from Reddit and TikTok. Earlier this week, reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi pointed out to X what Instagram is working on. Option called “Publish from Instagram” We may display your post as part of search engine results.
