X, formerly Twitter, turned TweetDeck into X Pro and pushed it behind a paywall. But there's a new column-based social media tool in town, and that's from Instagram threads.
Mark Zuckerberg announced today that the social network is testing a sticky column on the web. Meta CEO didn't say what you can pin to the interface using this tool, but the screenshots he posted suggest that you can at least pin topics.
Mehta said you can now pin your favorite searches, accounts, saved posts, and notifications. You can also enable automatic updates for this column to speed up updates. The company says this feature is only available to a small number of people around the world.
The move could also mean that the Threads API will give third-party developers more flexibility in presenting social network content in other ways. However, until now, Meta hasn't talked about allowing developers to build independent Threads clients through the API.
Some developers are building experiences like TweetDeck for social networks like Bluesky and Mastodon. Mastodon also has its own built-in TweetDeck-style interface on the web. But Zuckerberg's announcement marks Threads' first move in the direction of column-based tools.
The more important question is, will they call it ThreadsDeck?
