The platform reached that milestone a day after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during the company's Q2 2024 earnings call that Threads, its latest social media experiment, had “nearly” reached 200 million users.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed in a Threads post that Twitter rival Meta has hit 200 million active users, a figure it took just 13 months for Meta to hit.
“I'm excited to announce we've hit the 200 million milestone on @threads,” Mosseri wrote. “I hope Threads continues to inspire ideas that connect people and that this amazing community continues to grow.”
Growth for Threads has been strong: Launched in July 2023, the text-centric social media platform hit 150 million users in April 2024, passed the 175 million user milestone in July on its first anniversary, and continued to grow rapidly, hitting 200 million users a month later.
By comparison, Threads' biggest competitor, X (formerly Twitter), had more than 600 million monthly users as of May, according to owner Elon Musk. Musk's abrupt policy shift led to the demise of the old Twitter, alienating many of its longtime users, which prompted Meta to launch Threads to offer consumers an alternative space for online discussion.
Last year, Zuckerberg suggested that Threads “has a good chance” of becoming a platform with more than 1 billion users. During the latest earnings call, Meta's CEO also said that the platform is on a good growth trajectory.
“We're making solid progress towards building what will become the new leading social app, and we're seeing deeper engagement,” he said, adding, “We're very happy with the trajectory.”
Zuckerberg added that in addition to the delivery feature, the company is also working on improving Threads' content recommendation system.
