OpenAI extends ChatGPT's advanced voice mode capabilities to the web, allowing users to converse with AI chatbots directly from their browser. Kevin Weil, the company's chief product officer, announced the launch of the X.
This feature, which makes conversations with ChatGPT more natural, is rolling out to ChatGPT's paying customers this week. This means you must be a Plus, Enterprise, Teams, or Edu subscriber to access this feature.
The web launch follows the debut of OpenAI's Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT's iOS and Android apps in September.
Advanced Voice Mode uses the native audio capabilities of OpenAI's GPT-4o to enable natural, real-time conversations between users and ChatGPT. Chatbots can understand and respond to nonverbal cues, such as the rate at which you speak. Chatbots can also respond with emotion.
To start an audio conversation on the web, you need to select the audio icon at the bottom right of the ChatGPT prompt window. Next, you need to give your browser access to your computer's microphone. When you start a voice conversation, you will see a screen with a blue ball in the center.
ChatGPT has nine output voices to choose from, each with its own tone and character. For example, you might choose “Arbor,” which is “easy-going and versatile,” or “Ember,” which is “confident and optimistic.”
Weil said OpenAI plans to roll out this feature to free users “in the coming weeks.”
Users with Plus and Team subscriptions are subject to daily limits when using Advanced Voice Mode. According to the feature's help page, daily limits are subject to change. OpenAI will notify you when there are 15 minutes of advanced audio left for the day. Free users can access monthly previews and try out features.
