Openai launched a new, inexpensive ChatGPT paid subscription plan called £399 ($4.60) a month in India, called ChatGpt Go.
The company had turned on local currency prices for all plans a few days ago. The launch also allows users to pay through UPI (Unified Payment Interface), the Indian payment framework.
Nick Turley, Vice President of Openai and Head of ChatGpt, said the plan will increase message, image generation and file uploads 10 times in the free tier. The ChatGpt Go plan allows better memory retention for more personalized responses, Turely said.
ChatGpt Go has been released in India. This is a new subscription tier that will allow Indian users to access the most popular features. It has 10x message limit, 10x image generation, 10x file upload, and 2x long memory. All for Rs. 399

“Making ChatGpt more affordable was an important question from users! We first deployed Go in India and learn from feedback before expanding to other countries,” Turley says.
From a currency conversion perspective, the Plus Plan was over $20 for Indian users when offered in local currency. The new Go plan offers a more affordable alternative to those looking to use ChatGpt primarily for chat, image generation and file processing.
Tibor Blaho, a software engineer with a reputation for accurate leaks of upcoming AI products, has previously teased the plan and its details.
The company has restricted the plan to India, but the company said on its support page it is working to expand the plan to more regions.

Last month, Turley said ChatGpt currently has over 700 million users worldwide, up from 500 million in March. Openai announced ChatGPT's updated image generator feature in March, but since then it has been increasing in use in India. Openai CEO Sam Altman said in a recent podcast that India is the company's second largest market. With the GO Plan, we want to win that.
According to App Analytics Firm Appfigures, India has downloaded more than 29 million downloads from the country in terms of downloading ChatGPT apps across the platform in the past 90 days. However, during this period, they only made $3.6 million from domestic users during this period.
This move could be subtle to more consumers subscribe to using ChatGpt further, taking into account the price. Other AI companies are moving to attract users from the internet user base of more than 850 million countries. Last month, Perplexity partnered with network provider Airtel to offer a free Prplexity Pro subscription. Google also offered a free AI Pro plan for India-based students for a year.
The Openai move doesn't offer freebies, but local and affordable pricing could potentially improve subscription conversion rates for ChatGPT in India.
