The expansion efforts follow the San Francisco-based ChatGPT maker's massive $6.4 billion funding round, announcement of restructuring plans, and a series of executive departures.
The company also said managing director Oliver Jay (formerly chief revenue officer at Asana and head of APAC and LATAM at Dropbox) will oversee international operations and drive global expansion from Singapore.
An OpenAI spokesperson told TechCrunch that the company has begun building a team in Singapore that will serve as a hub to support customers and partners in the Asia-Pacific region. The company is currently hiring engineers and plans to open a Singapore office at the end of this year. This is OpenAI's second office in Asia, following the opening of its Tokyo office in April.
“Singaporeans have the highest number of ChatGPT per capita users in the world, and the number of weekly active users in Singapore has doubled since the beginning of the year,” OpenAI said in a statement.
Alongside the opening of its new office, OpenAI announced that it is partnering with AI Singapore to expand access to its AI technology in Southeast Asia. AI Singapore is a national program launched in 2017 by the National Research Foundation (NRF) to help businesses and research institutions in Singapore leverage AI.
