OpenAI plans to make a livestream announcement Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, but is trying to keep expectations in check.
The company describes the event as “an opportunity to demo updates to ChatGPT and GPT-4.” Meanwhile, CEO Sam Altman said: Promoted the event with a message“It's not gpt-5, it's not a search engine, but we've been working hard on some new things that we think people will love. It feels like magic to me.”
Altman's remarks were likely alluding to a Reuters report published earlier this week suggesting that OpenAI plans to unveil an AI-powered search product on Monday, and Google I starting on Tuesday. /O Shocked from the developer conference. The report also said the announcement date was “subject to change.”
The Information and Bloomberg previously reported that OpenAI was developing a search product. According to The Information, the product will be partially powered by Bing (Microsoft is a major OpenAI investor and partner). According to Bloomberg, this will work as a feature within ChatGPT, allowing chatbots to search the web and cite sources, rather than being a black box that returns answers with unknown origins.
So, at least in theory, OpenAI could announce a search feature on Monday, and Altman's claim that it's “not a search engine” could still be true. Let's take a look.
The livestream begins Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. You can watch it on the OpenAI website.
