PayPal today announced that it is launching “Tap to Pay” in the U.S. for merchants with iPhones through the Venmo and Zettle apps. PayPal, which owns both Venmo and Zettle, said the feature allows businesses to accept contactless card and digital wallet payments directly on the iPhone without any additional cost or hardware. This release comes eight months after PayPal introduced this feature for merchants using his Android smartphone.
With Tap to Pay, you can not only accept payments from cards and digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay, but also add taxes, take tips, and write receipts without the need for additional hardware. You can send and refund. The company says proceeds will be deposited immediately into businesses' Venmo or PayPal Zettle accounts. PayPal charges 2.29% + 9¢ for each Zettle and Venmo tap-to-pay sale.
Tap to Pay on iPhone lets Venmo business profile users reach customers by accepting payments from buyers, even if they don't have a Venmo account. A merchant can manage both her Venmo and card payment transactions directly within the Venmo app.
The official release of this feature comes several months after PayPal began testing the feature through its early access program.
The introduction of this new feature comes two years after PayPal rival Stripe became Apple's first Tap to Pay payment partner. A year later, Stripe enabled businesses to perform his Tap to Pay transactions on his NFC-enabled Android device as well. For his Tap to Pay purchases using Stripe's payment gateway, Stripe charges him $0.10 per transaction. Additionally, there are additional fees for card and digital wallet payments.
As consumers become more cashless, PayPal is helping millions of small businesses adapt to changing consumer behavior by eliminating the need for merchants to purchase card readers with iPhone Tap to Pay. says it's helpful.
