Paying homage to the Myspace era, Instagram has launched a new feature that lets you add music to your profile, a collaboration with singer Sabrina Carpenter, who released a teaser for her new song “Taste” on her Instagram profile ahead of her album release on Friday.
To add a song to your profile, go to “Edit Profile” and search for a song in Instagram's music library. Just like when you choose a song for your Instagram Reels or Stories, you can slide left and right to choose up to 30 seconds of a song. However, unlike Myspace, the song won't automatically play when you visit someone's profile. Instead, you'll need to click the play button first.
You can also change or remove the song at any time by returning to Edit Profile or by tapping the song on your profile.
Instagram has reportedly begun experimenting with music in profiles in 2022. The new feature is aimed at enhancing user profiles by allowing users to express their taste in music and enhance creative expression on the platform. The app first added the ability to add music to stories in 2018. Last year, it introduced a feature that allowed users to add music to notes and photo carousels.
The new feature comes at a time when users are nostalgic for the “good old days” of social networking, as new apps compete to become the modern-day Myspace, including Noplace, a text-based social app with Gen Z-focused features like fun, brightly colored, customizable profiles.
As users start to get bored with the social media giant, it seems Instagram is trying to compete with new alternative social media platforms that are trying to become the next big thing, examples include BeReal, Dailyy, Palmsy, Lapse, and Whee.
