Sex toy maker Tenga notified customers of the data breach on Friday, according to an email obtained by TechCrunch.
In the message, the Japanese company said that “someone gained access to the professional email account of one of its employees,” which allowed the hacker to access the contents of the employee's inbox. This access could have allowed the hacker to view and steal customer names, email addresses, and history of email correspondence “which may include order details and customer service inquiries.”
According to emails sent to customers, the hackers also sent spam emails to the hacked employees' contacts, including customers.
Tenga did not respond to requests for comment or further information, including the total number of customers affected. The company says on its website that it has shipped more than 162 million products worldwide.
Order details and customer service inquiries may contain sensitive information that many customers probably do not want to disclose, given the nature of the product in question.
Although the company did not confirm that customers' passwords had been compromised, it advised customers to change their passwords and to be especially wary of suspicious emails coming from certain employees whose accounts may have been compromised.
Tenga said it took several steps after the breach, including resetting the credentials of hacked employees and enabling a basic security feature called multi-factor authentication “system-wide” that prevents access to accounts with stolen passwords. The company did not respond when asked if there was no multifactor on the email account prior to this breach.

Tenga was founded in Japan in 2005 and is headquartered in Tokyo. Tenga sells a variety of sex toys primarily for men. It is unclear whether this breach affected customers outside the United States, given that the email apparently came from Tenga Store USA.
Tenga is the latest in a long list of sex toy companies to be hacked, including adult sites like Lovesense last year, Pornhub last year, and SexPanther in 2020.
