Social media company Snap announced Tuesday that it plans to add watermarks to AI-generated images on its platform.
The platform has added a small ghost logo with a glowing icon to indicate AI-generated images. The company says the watermark will appear when you export the image or save it to your camera roll.
The company said on its support page that removing Snap's “glitter watermark ghost” violates its terms. It's unclear how Snap intends to detect watermark removal. We have reached out to the company for more information and will update the story when we hear back.
Other tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, and Google are also taking steps to label and identify images created with AI-powered tools.
Currently, Snap lets paid users create or edit AI-generated images using Snap AI and a selfie-focused feature called Dreams.
In a blog post outlining its AI safety and transparency efforts, the company explained that gen-AI-powered features, such as lenses, are indicated with visual markers like glowing logos. .
The company also added context cards with AI-generated images from tools like Dream selfies to provide users with relevant information.
In February, Snap partnered with HackerOne to focus on AI image generation tools by applying a bug bounty program. The company also said it has created a review process to eliminate any issues that arise when developing AI-powered lenses.
“We want Snapchatters from all walks of life to have fair access and expectations when using all features within our app, especially our AI-powered experiences. With this in mind, “We are conducting additional testing to minimize potentially biased AI results,” the company said in a blog post.
Snapchat was thrown into chaos shortly after introducing its “My AI” chatbot last year. The Washington Post reported that the bot was giving inappropriate responses to users. The company then introduced controls in Family Center to allow parents and guardians to monitor and limit their teens' interactions with AI.
