Spotify's educational audio courses could be coming to the US

Spotify has expanded its streaming service to include education courses in addition to music, podcasts, and audiobooks. The company on Tuesday mentioned one of its new features, called Courses, where users can learn about topics in areas such as business, technology, lifestyle and music.

Spotify says the feature is initially being piloted in the UK. But further evidence indicates it could arrive in the US soon

Technology enthusiast and early adopter Chris Messina highlighted the development of the course in the United States. Messina's findings indicate that courses will become available on subjects that may appeal to more technical people, such as learning about AI, Web3, the Metaverse, and other digital tools.

We also discovered that users can filter their Spotify library to only show “Podcasts and Courses” instead of just the current “Podcasts.”

Although Spotify did not confirm that the course would be distributed in the United States, Messina discovered that the section was accessible through search.

However, here the category page is empty, indicating that the US feature is still under development.

The company has long been working to raise awareness of its services, not just its music. By offering different types of audio, Spotify can grow its revenue through different forms of monetization. This includes ads within audio and video podcasts (including AI ads) and paid “extra” hours on audiobooks for subscribers who want to continue listening past their 15 hours per month. The company is also lagging behind market leader Audible in standalone audiobook subscriptions, which cost $10 a month.

With courses, Spotify could generate more revenue by charging users for some of the programs it streams.

Spotify today pointed out several courses it recommends you start.

Correction: The course was updated after publication to note that it began piloting in the UK last year, but new discoveries may mean it may soon launch in the US.
