Brazil's Supreme Court ordered the immediate nationwide suspension of the X Platform on Friday, following a months-long legal battle with Elon Musk's social media company over content moderation, according to Bloomberg.
The court added that anyone using a VPN to access the X Platform would be fined 50,000 reais ($8,900) per day, but it was unclear how the ruling would be enforced.
Earlier this month, X suspended its operations in Brazil in protest of a court order requiring it to remove accounts that allegedly spread false information. At the time, the company said that Brazilian Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes had “threatened to arrest its legal representative in Brazil if it did not comply with the censorship order.” Moraes warned earlier this week that Brazil would ban the service if X did not appoint a legal representative in Brazil.
“We expect Judge Alexandre de Moraes will soon order the closure of X in Brazil for simply refusing to comply with his unlawful orders to censor political opponents,” X's international affairs team said in a tweet on Friday morning.
The platform said it would make public the Brazilian Supreme Court's request in the coming days and would not comply with the order.
