Since the launch of Threads last year, users have been asking for the option to set the “Following” feed as their default feed. Now, more than a year later, Threads is finally letting users test its features.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Monday that the social network is currently testing options that allow users to choose For You, Following, or a custom feed as their default feed.
This release comes days after Threads rolled out custom feeds, allowing users to curate feeds based on specific topics or specific user profiles. This tool will allow Threads to compete with Bluesky, a decentralized social network that allows users to build their own algorithms, feeds, and lists.
Meta has been quick to update Threads at a time when many X users have migrated to Bluesky, which now has over 20 million users. Recent changes to the app show that Meta is listening to user feedback and trying to reassure users by giving them what they want and prevent them from moving to Bluesky.
Last week, the platform rolled out changes to show you more content from the people you follow in the app's “For You” algorithmic feed. While some welcomed the change, some reacted with displeasure to Instagram chief Adam Mosseri's announcement post, pointing out that they just wanted the option to set the feed they follow as their default feed. There were people too.
Fast forward a few days and users will have the option to do so. “I'm interested in how and whether people will use this,” Zuckerberg said in an announcement post.
A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch via email that the new features are being rolled out to some users.
Although Threads has a strong user base of over 275 million monthly active users, it faces increasing competition from Bluesky. Data from market intelligence firm Similarweb shows that Bluesky has caught up with Threads when it comes to daily active users and could eventually catch up with Threads if the social network can maintain its current growth rate. .
