Meta's newest social network, Threads, is launching its own fact-checking program after piggybacking on Instagram and Facebook's networks for several months.
Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said the company “recently” introduced the ability for fact checkers to evaluate and mark false content in threads. However, Mosseri did not provide details on when exactly the program was rolled out or whether it was limited to specific regions.
It is also unclear which organizations are Thread Meta's fact-checking partners. We've asked the company for more information and will update the story if we hear back.
The move appears to be primarily aimed at preparing for the upcoming US elections. India is also in the midst of a general election, but social networks are unlikely to roll out fact-checking programs during the election period, rather than launching projects before the election.
In December, Meta said he wanted to bring a fact-checking program to Threads.
“While we currently match fact-checking ratings from Facebook and Instagram to Threads, our goal is to enable our fact-checking partners to review and rate misinformation on their apps. That's true,” Mosseri said in a post at the time.
