TikTok's next Instagram-competing photo-sharing app could be called TikTok Notes, according to screenshots posted by users. TikTok also confirmed that the app is in development.
For the past few days, TikTok users have been receiving pop-up notifications about the new TikTok Notes app for sharing photos.
According to the notice, the company will soon release a “new app for photo posting” called TikTok Notes, and users' existing photo posts will be shared on the app. Users can also choose not to share their image posts to the new app.
TikTok confirmed that the app is working, but said it is not yet available.
A TikTok spokesperson told TechCrunch: “As part of our continued commitment to innovating the TikTok experience, we're empowering our community to create and share their creativity with photos and text in dedicated spaces for those formats. We're looking for ways to do it.”
Separately, the TikTok-owned URL photo.tiktok.com (web archive link) displays a placeholder marketing image with the text “Open in TikTok Notes.”
Last month, code and language found within TikTok APK files, a file format that can be installed on Android, suggested that the company was working on launching a photo-sharing app called TikTok Photos.
However, the latest pop-up within TikTok suggests that the company may be considering a different name for the app.
TikTok and Meta are both fiercely competing for the social media space. While the ByteDance-owned app is preparing to launch a photo-sharing related app, Meta has unveiled a vertical-first video player for his Facebook.
TikTok is also experimenting with different formats, including 30-minute videos and text posts like X and Threads.
